Fairtrade

FAIRTRADE FRIDAY

On Friday, 6th March 2009, Campbeltown Grammar School celebrated Fairtrade Friday, marking the end of Fairtrade Fortnight 2009.

Within the school, several activities were taking place: Art made a display that pupils used to create still life oil pastel pictures, Home Economics tried out several recipes from the Fairtrade website incorporating many Fairtrade ingredients, Music based their lessons on world music and a stall in the foyer gave out free bananas to join in the record attempt for ‘Most bananas eaten at one place in one day.’

CGS’s Fairtrade Steering Group has been working within the school since Christmas. Their goal is to achieve Fairtrade status for CGS and they have been working alongside Deirdre Henderson who has been doing similar things within the wider community.

So far, the Steering Group consisting of four pupils and one teacher, have been making gradual changes within the school. Besides Fairtrade Friday, they have been working to get a Fairtrade Policy made part of the School Improvement plan, they have also worked to get Fairtrade incorporated into some curriculum’s across a range of subjects like R.E and Home Economics. They also did a survey of local shops and cafes to see for themselves how much Fairtrade is used in the community.

Fairtrade ensures fair prices for 3rd World farmers, giving them better living conditions and a fairer life. A better reward for much hard work. This is a philosophy in which R.E teacher Ronald Wilson strongly believes, and as the original founder of the Fairtrade Steering Group, he works to make this an everyday realisation within CGS.
