Bags

Every pupil should have a bag capable of carrying books, folders, jotters and homework diary, and keeping them protected from the weather or other sources of damage. At intervals and lunchtimes, but only at intervals and lunchtimes, bags may be left on the racks provided in cloakrooms and other designated areas.

Behaviour

Pupils are expected to behave well at all times. Poor behaviour hinders the progress of all pupils, not just the progress of the pupil who behaves badly.

Those who choose to behave badly will face staged consequences aimed at improving their behaviour and enabling learning to continue. These are:

Pupils who are persistently disruptive will be placed on a Behaviour Card. While they are on a Behaviour Card they will lose their right to take part in extra-curricular and other social activities. Their parents will be asked to come to the school to help find ways to improve their behaviour. Those unable to behave in classes will be placed on Behaviour Recovery Measures and may be educated separately in the school’s Behaviour Support Unit.

To emphasise the importance of parental support in promoting good behaviour and the commitment of pupils to behaving well, we ask parents and pupils to sign a ‘Behaviour Partnership Agreement at the start of their first year or when joining the school. To show that the school is also committed to helping promote good behaviour this agreement is also signed by the pupil’s Year Head.

Please see also the entries under Codes of Conduct and Exclusion.

Bicycles

Pupils are permitted to come to school by bike only if they do so safely and follow some simple safety rules. They must dismount and push the bike on school paths and in the playgrounds. They must not allow other pupils to ride on the bike with them. Bikes must be left only in the designated areas at the Technical Block or at the South Door, where a bike rack is provided. We ask pupils to take great care when cycling on the public roads and to avoid taking any unnecessary risks. We recommend wearing a safety helmet when cycling.

Books

Pupils must take care of textbooks issued to them. If a book is lost, or damaged such that it can’t be given out again, the pupil who was given it has to pay to replace it.

Pupils are permitted to borrow books from the Resource Centre. Those in S1 to S3 may borrow one book at a time, those in S4 and above, two. The loan period is two weeks, but seniors who require texts for special study may be allowed to keep them for longer periods by arrangement. Pupils have to pay for books they lose or damage.

Bullying

Bullying is an issue in every school. It is not just physical assault but also name calling and other forms of psychological pressure, such as being excluded deliberately from friendship groups. Whatever form it takes, we don’t want it in Campbeltown Grammar School. Every pupil has the right to an education free from the hurt and damage that bullying can cause. No-one should put up with being bullied.

Bullying is best dealt with when it is brought out into the open. A pupil who feels s/he is being bullied must tell someone about it. The best people to tell are Guidance teachers. First year pupils could also tell the seniors who provide support for younger pupils throughout the school.

If a pupil knows of someone else who is being bullied but that person is unwilling to tell, he/she should help by telling someone about it. If the pupil tells a parent about bullying, even about someone else being bullied, the parent should contact any member of the Pupil Support staff. This will be treated very confidentially.

It is never good to let bullying continue without telling. You can't make it worse by telling, only by keeping quiet.

We want to do our best to stamp out bullying in the Grammar School. We can only do something about it if we are told what is going on.

Please also see the section on Cyberbullying.

Buses

School buses are provided for those who would otherwise have to walk more than three miles to school.

Pupils who travel on the school buses are expected to behave properly on them in the interests of safety. Pupils who misbehave on the buses will be warned. If they continue to misbehave after a warning, they may have their right to free transport withdrawn. This is decided between the bus company and the education authority without the school being involved.

If a pupil misses the bus at the start of the day, it is his/her parent's responsibility to get them to school. If a pupil misses the bus at the end of the school day, s/he should report to the school office at once, so that alternative arrangements can be made to get them home.

Pupils attending school activities (band practices, sports fixtures, clubs, etc.) after school will be given a late bus pass at the activity.

Bus Passes

Pupils who are entitled to free school transport now use their Young Scot card as their bus pass, valid for travel between their home and the school on school days. Those pupils have a special symbol added to their Young Scot card. The card must be shown to the driver on boarding the bus.

Bus passes are not valid for travel after 4.30 pm. Pupils who normally go home on a school bus but wish to take part in any of the extra-curricular activities held at the end of the school day can be given a pass to go home on one of the service buses which run later. These late passes are issued at activity. A late pass is valid only on the day of issue, so a new pass is required each time a pupil has a reason to be later going home.
