Geography
‘What do you call a group of Geography teachers’
‘A depression of geography teachers,’ was the response from the class!
We hope that we do not convey this glum outlook to our pupils; in fact the motto for our department is ‘In Geography we choose success’.
The department has pupils studying Geography from S1-S6. Increasingly Geography is focussing on important issues which are constantly in the news such as climate change, rainforest destruction, desertification, and exploitation of Arctic wildernesses as well as issues on population, trade and aid concerning the ‘Poor World’ especially Africa. We also have concerns in our own country over migration and more locally, farming and changing industry. These types of issues are studied along with the more traditional physical geography topics. Pupil’s work is displayed on the corridor boards and within each classroom.
One of the fun parts of Geography is getting out and about doing fieldwork. Most of this takes place in S3 and S4 and then again in S6 if pupils choose Advanced Higher Geography. The pupils enjoy guddling about in the Carradale Water and are often embarrassed at being seen in Campbeltown with clipboards.
We hope that the huge variety of skills they leave the department with will help them in their future, no matter where this may be.
Homework
There is no set pattern to the issue of homework. This is issued when required and may take the form of completion of a piece of work, Past Paper questions, revision questions, reading of information or preparation for assessments.
