History

The department is staffed by Mr G. Baxter and Mr Harrow. The department teaches all levels from first year through to advanced Higher.

History is widely recognised as an important and popular subject. The education of young people would be incomplete without an appreciation and understanding of Scotland’s own past alongside the wider British, European and World contexts. The way history is taught nowadays encourages pupils to study and evaluate sources of evidence and come to their own conclusions.

History makes an important contribution to the development of pupils’ knowledge and understanding. It also makes a wider contribution to the curriculum in developing skills, which are essential in present day society. For example, the ability to consider and debate an issue, with the attendant research and presentation skills, is one developed in History which has a very wide application. The skill of historical writing stands young people in good stead when they move onto higher education, irrespective whether they continue to study history.

The History Department aims to provide the highest quality education by:

Homework

Homework forms an integral part of the learning and teaching process. The nature of the homework task and the amount will vary with the age, ability and needs of the pupil. In S1-2 an agreed programme of homework is followed by the department. Standard Grade, Higher and Advanced Higher students will be given regular homework tasks to reinforce, consolidate and extend classroom learning.

The Department is involved in supported study classes after school and during the Easter holidays to prepare students for National Assessments.
