Home Economics
The department has 5 members of staff: Head of Department Miss Alison Woodrow, Mrs Lorna Millar, Mrs Ruth Crosbie, Miss Emily Baird, and auxilliary Mrs Hazel Stalker.
In S1 and S2, follow the 5-14 technology course for 2 periods per week. In S3 and S4, Standard Grade Home Economics or hospitality is offered for 3 periods per week. In S5 and S6, National Units and Intermediate Hospitality are offered. We also run a cake decoration unit and one of the highlights of the year is the Christmas cake display in December as pupils put their final projects on display for a day.
Over the last decade the subject has changed radically and we look forward to more modern facilities to meet these demands in the near future.
The department also runs a number of courses and workshops over the year including a very popular Chef School and a Christmas club. We are also a popular choice for the summer school activities where pupils from P6 to S2 learn to cook healthy dishes.
On Friday lunchtimes the department holds ‘Healthy Me’ in conjunction with Fusions where pupils and staff can come along and have health checks as well as information on a variety of health related topics. To complement this we have varied corridor displays to educate and engage pupils.
One of our projects at present is growing our own herbs and vegetables, which will be used by pupils in the kitchen. See our pictures in the gallery.
