Physical Education, Sport and Health Department

The Physical Education Department is staffed by Mr S. McQuaker, Miss M. Brown and Miss C. McLean. All pupils in S1-S4 have two periods of P.E. per week, in addition, Standard Grade and Higher/Intermediate courses are offered. In S5-6, P.E. is elective and here, the pupils have the opportunity to participate in activities outwith school such as tennis, golf and using the facilities at the Aqualibrium.

The ethos of the department is very much one of enjoyment.

The P.E. department also provides equipment to encourage active lunchtimes as well as badminton, basketball, gymnastics and table tennis. After school, on Wednesday, our Inter House competitions are held. There are many after school activities in the P.E. department including athletics, cross country, cardio-combat, girls club and Health and Sports Awards.

The Active School Sports Co-ordinator, Linsey Owen works closely with the department and provision is made for pupils to experience competition in various disciplines against other schools. We compete annually in the MAKI competition (Mid-Argyll, Kintyre and Islay) and currently are joint holders of this trophy as well as attending the annual Youth Games for pupils in S1-2.

A new initiative in 2008 was the setting up of a Young Leaders Sports Programme, giving senior students opportunities to gain National Governing Body Qualifications and certificated courses. We are looking for a commitment from senior pupils who attend these courses to ‘put something back’ into the school sports programme in South Kintyre – this can be assisting at after school clubs in CGS, clubs in local primary schools or with our Sports Development Officers working at festivals, tournaments or sports days. In its first year this initiative has proved very popular with our senior students.

Our links with the Primary sector are strong and we are pleased to be able to invite the incoming P7’s to a variety of activity days throughout the year. They also make use of our facilities and equipment when necessary. In addition, we often provide pupil helpers at Primary events. For part of the year, we hold a Girls only after school group, when the girls can work alongside our S1 and S2 pupils.

A pale blue or navy T-shirt can be purchased for use in the department.
