School Meals

The school cafeteria provides a variety of hot and cold main meals, soup, salads, sandwiches and drinks at lunchtimes. Snacks, such as filled rolls, are available both at lunchtime and at the morning interval. The price of each item is displayed and pupils pay after uplifting the food selected. Pupils may also bring packed lunches to school and those who do are accommodated in the dining room. There are vending machines in the foyer which sell water, soft drinks and healthy snacks. If a pupil requires a special diet for medical or other reasons, parents should write to the Rector giving as much information as possible.

‘Cashless’ catering

The cafeteria operates on a ‘cashless’ system. Cash is no longer accepted for cafeteria transactions. Every pupil receives a ‘Young Scot’ card at the start of first and fourth year. This is similar to a credit card. It can be ‘topped up’ with money regularly and is presented at the cafeteria instead of cash. Whatever the pupil ‘buys’ in the cafeteria is deducted from the balance held on the card. ‘Top-up’ machines are located close to the girls’ and boys’ cloakrooms. Parents may send cheques to school to cover a week or more of meals at a time. Limits can be placed on how much can be 'spent’ daily. The cards are also used for the sale of school dance tickets and double as the pupil’s library card. The ‘Young Scot’ card entitles the pupil to discounts in shops, Citylink coaches, and a range of other service providers. It also acts as a ‘proof of age’ card. If a pupil forgets his/her Young Scot card on any day, a temporary replacement card can be issued if he/she goes to the school office at the start of the day. There is a charge of £1.00 for this service. Lost or damaged Young Scot cards can be replaced at a cost of £2.50.

Entitlement to free meals

Children of parents receiving income support, income-based job-seekers’ allowance, or Child Tax Credit (subject to entitlement) are entitled to a free mid-day meal. Information and application forms for free school meals may be obtained from schools and the Area Office. The free meal allowance is credited automatically to the pupil’s Young Scot card, which is then presented at the cafeteria in the normal way.
